7 Simple Ways to Promote Wellness in Your Home

Reading Time: 4 minutes

COVID-19 measures are slowly loosening up, but we still spend most of our time at home, and it’ll be a while until we return to usual daily activities out in the world. It is only logical that while we are still stuck inside, we do our best to upgrade our living space so that it evokes pleasant feelings and a comforting ambiance. To do that, we need to identify what bothers us in our home so that we can get rid of everything that brings negative energy or that irritates us and replace it with meaningful, positive objects. Even small changes can make a huge difference in the overall atmosphere in your home. A bit of reorganizing can go a long way in promoting wellness and below, we’ll talk more about that. Here are seven ways to promote wellness in your home.

1. Create Your Special Corner

Having a dedicated space in your home for relaxing, mediation or reading is vital these days amidst all the challenges that we’re facing every day. A corner where, no matter how busy or how stressed you are, you can go, sit down and just take a deep breath leaving all that stress behind. This can be a separate room or a corner within your bedroom or even living room. It can be a meditation spot for yoga practitioners or a self-care corner with a bookcase full of books, magazines, pillows, a comfy chair, and a soothing table lamp. A bonus is if the corner is near a window so that you can get some vitamin D while you relax.

Having a dedicated room or corner for yourself can help you overcome your daily challenges even if you are working from home, cooking, helping your kids with their assignments, etc. When the noise and the daily obligations become overwhelming, you can take a break, retreat to your special place and do something for yourself.

2. Schedule Some Me Time

You can even schedule some self-care time each week for yourself to prevent using all your spare time doing chores. Put it in your calendar and make it a point to look forward to it. Taking time to yourself to destress with a cup of herbal tea and your favorite book can give you the energy you need to move on with your day and complete all your tasks. This can be a self-care moment where you put on a moisturizing face mask and just read a magazine. It can be meditation, painting, journaling, exercising, a handcrafting hobby, or whatever else makes you feel happy.

3. Redecorate Your Home

If you feel like your home is adding to the stress level you already experience day-to-day, you should rearrange some furniture or bring in some new pieces that will aid your plan to promote wellness at home. Start with the priority-your bedroom. This should feel like an oasis, not a cluttered mess with uncomfortable furniture that fails to provide the rest you desperately need. If you are going to replace some furniture, you should be investing in quality bedroom furniture, more specifically, your bed because this is where it all starts and ends.

Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom and should be comfortable and made of sustainable natural materials such as wood. Aside from being very durable, it also creates a sort of a warm, relaxing atmosphere. This is exactly what your bedroom should feel like. Paired with some details you like such as comfy bedding, photographs, candles, and plants, your bedroom will easily become the oasis you dream of.

4. Add More House Plants

Is there a simpler way to create a more natural, relaxing atmosphere and boost your mood than by placing a few house plants around? Plants clean the air and remove the toxins, therefore offering proven health benefits. Their stunning green color is also very pleasant to look at and can elevate your home décor. All this combined helps you promote wellness at home.

There are many air-purifying plants you can incorporate such as Sansevieria or Snake Plants. Many low-maintenance plants don’t require too much care so they’re perfect for busy individuals. If you’re already a fan of house plants and love caring for them, an indoor garden might be a great addition to your home. Besides having fresh, fragrant ingredients at your hand, you will also enjoy nurturing the plants as it has a calming effect.

5. Let Light In

Getting plenty of sunlight exposure goes hand in hand with wellness. Sunlight is beneficial in more than one way and significantly affects your current mood. This is why we always feel so refreshed and in a better mood after a walk, especially now during springtime when it’s not too hot yet.

If you have thick drapes, get rid of them and allow the light to flow through your rooms. Given that we spend so much time inside, with many of us still working from home we need to find ways to let nature help us even when we can’t spend time outside. Make sure you receive light in your home office too because this is likely where you spend the biggest part of the day. You can replace your heavy drapery with some light curtains or no curtains at all if that’s what you prefer.

6. Start Eating Well

An inseparable part of wellness is eating well. It’s not just about the right lighting, the right furniture, and plants. You also need to nourish your body with healthy, fresh ingredients while avoiding heavily processed foods.
Try to cook at least one meal a day. Include fresh vegetables and fruits in your daily diet. This doesn’t mean that you need to avoid all other foods. Restricting yourself can have a contrary effect to what you want to achieve. Therefore, do indulge in some favorite snacks from time to time, but try to consume healthy foods too.

7. Embrace Home Scents

Ensure that your home always smells good. It is recommended that you open the windows and ventilate at least once a day (usually in the morning), but you can do so more frequently if you’re not cold. A properly ventilated, scented home will instantly make you feel better. Use scented candles for this and/or essential oils. There are so many home fragrances you can buy too, but beware of those that are filled with chemicals as they might do more harm than good. Natural scents like orange peel have a marvelous scent so you can leave it next to your potpourri on your coffee table. Plus, it’s organic!

Promoting wellness in your home starts with you and taking care of your needs. That is why before you embark on a redecorating journey, think about what bothers you in your home now and what you can do to change it. Even small steps can have a big impact on your well-being.
